Letters from the Inside, part 4

Now you have read allmost all of the novel, which is a great acomplishment. Answer the following questions individually in class today (Monday) and also write a comment on someone else's answer. Note that you have 30 minutes of this lesson.

1. Tracey gradually changes throughout the book. How? Also write what you think about this development.
2. “Seems like each letter takes us a little further, you know what I mean?” (p. 88) Mandy writes. What do you think she is saying to Tracey and what has happened to their letters since Mandy found out that Tracey is in jail?
3. What do you think of Tracey’s poem? What does it say about her as a person, and her situation in jail?
4. How do Mandy’s parents react when she tells the truth about Tracey? Were you surprised by their reaction? Why/why not?

  1. At first she was kind and seemed like a normal girl. But when Mandy asked her a lot of things and when they got to know each other better, it became harder for Tracy to lie. Tracy got angry because of Mandys questions and at least she told the truth about herself.
We think that it's better to be honest from the beginning, it doesn't create problems like this. Like you used to say, honesty is the best! People will not trust you if you have lied much before, and it will be hard to change afterwards. You have to dare to show who you really are, live your own life!

  2. Question 1

Tracy becomes a more soft person and shows more feelings, she's not such a hardtop in the end. she also mentioned she wasen't alpha female in jail anymore.

    Question 2

I think she means that each letter takes both mandy and tracy closer to the truth of what happend to tracy and why she's in jail.

I'm not realy sure of what the real purpose of that question is but I'll give it a shot.
I think they get looked through by the gaurds in the security block and u don't realy see what mandy writes to tracy and you will later in the book.

    Question 3

    I think it's a shit poem.
It shows how tracy is. She's a tough young woman ( might even a girl ) and that she's still the boss in the jail and theres no idea to fuck around with her 'coz she's going to give it back to you no matter what.

    Question 4

I think they were a bit chocked in the begining. Like, how would you react yourself. i wouldn't have been to happy if my child was talking to a criminal by any sort of comunication way.
Her mum cared a bit more then her dad and asked a few questions about it. Her father also said that he was in jail for some time.

  3. Question 1

Tracey has got more opened. In the beginning it´s not the real Tracey who writes, it´s an other side of her. The real Tracey doesn´t show up until the mittle of the book. She is more honestly, even if she could have been lied threw the whole book, she now tells Mandy the trouth. In the start they didn´t know each other and Tracey seemed like a normal girl, living her life. Now they are really good friends and got more personally. They talk about everything between heaven and erath.

  4. We think she means that they have got to know each other better, but Mandy don't dare telling to much about herself anymore. Because now she knows that Tracy is in jail. And Mandy can't trust anyting that Tracy tells her. She is scared to write wrong things to Tracy that makes her angry because she maybe will "come after her".

  5. Question 2

  6. We think that the poem is bad! It doesn't say anything about her.

  7. 1. At the first Tracey is lying about her life, and she seems like a normal and kind girl. But then when Mandy finds out the truth, she become a bitch, saucy and cocky. Over the time she becomes a bit nicer when they are more honest to each other.

We think that Tracey is unfair to Mandy but we also understand why she is like that.

    2. Mandy is trying to say that their friendship has grown, it's getting better and it's has taken them further. The letters have become more honest and nicer.

    3. She is good at poem because she has been trough a lot of things and it's likes she has had a bad and hard childhood. There are not so many people at Garrett that like her. So she writes down her feelings trough poem.

    4. First they don't care but then they pay attention to her when she mention that she is in Garrett. Her dad tells her that he has been at Garrett when he was fiftteen years old. The mother ask a lot of questions about it, she is inquisitive.

We are surprised about the father and what he has been trough. It's good that he tells the truth.

    /Jessica and Ellinor.

  8. 1) At first she was just a normal girl, then she started with all her lies, and then she told about the garot and she started to be more agressive but she also showed her true side.
I think that the girl she said she was in the begining was a more nice person then the one in the garot, but the book it´s more intresting now when she shown her real side.

2)Now she know her real side, she feel like they connect better and also she can be more true against her. Mandy is a bit crept out about the life Tracy lives. But Now they are honest to each other and that good.

3)It show´s that she´s a very agressive girl it also show that she´s have a bit of humour too.

    4) They are very suprised and nobody know´s what to say then her dad wants look up the garet she lives at. But her mum is also happy that she told them about the realation she haves with Tracy, she´s gets extremly shocked when her father tell her that he also have been in jail.

  9. 1. She changes her personality. And talks more about the jail and has become a more honest person. She lies much more in the begining than she does now. We think that it is a good development since shes not lying any more about her life.

    2. They are more honest about themselves now than what they were in the begining. And they can talk about everything now. They are talking more about the jail now whene Mandy has found out that Tracy was in jail.

    3. She seemed to be a very tough person. She need to shows whos the boss in the jail.

    4. The father takes it pretty cool. And i got surprised when he tells that he has been in jail when he was young.

  11. It looks like we have the same thoughts at question 4, Love. Good work everyone!

  12. They reacted at a good way, and that was because her dad has been in jail when he was younger.
But we think that they would be a little more scared about her daughter beacuse she is writing to Tracey and they don't know what she looks like or who she is.

    From Elin R & Maja

  13. She told the truth about her self to mandy and is now talking about her so called pointless lief. She doesn't seems care about anything, in tghe begining it seemd like her life was the greatest ever. But maybe it just was like a wishing for rain as she stod in the desert. The bookcompetition made her more happy and gave her a hole new confidence. That affects her point of mandy to so she keeps writing and isn't mean to her, like she sometimes is.

    2) The letters has become more and more emotional beacuse it's about the real life and not just letters that you talk about your boysfriends and shit. She's truth about Tracey is that she wants everyone to think she's hard and don't care. But she's not like that she's like in the begining of the book. A really nice person that do care about a good life and others. But seens she told that she's in jail the latters become more aggresiv from tracey's side. And Mandy thinks it's a little bit exciting. But the things she says is very mean and just a bungd of lies.

3)The poem is very good obvious beacuse she knows how to write, just like in the competition. That could be the thing that keeps her mood up. Maybe she was like that before she senteds to jail. That she was the only one. And did what she wanted to. And one day she couldn't to that and her life was different

    4) They don't even seems to know her befgore she's anserw. And the takes it Ok. but just because the don't know the hole truth. so it's hard to know- But the answers is ok beacuse the don't have all the information MARTYIN SIMME

  14. 1. She changes her behavior very often. Sometimes Tracey wanna write to Mandy but some times she don`t. She thinks its pointless but always change her mind.
Tracey don´t care about her romour any more and is more friendly.

2.Mandy asks Tracey alot of things example: what she is allowed to have in prision.
We think Mandy means that she know more and more about Tracey. Know, Mandy says that she can trust Tracey.

    3. Traceys poem looks like her own life. She did something really stupid and get in jail. Know she is a sweeter person.

4.We wasent surprised. The father was actually in a sort of prision when he was young. So he does understand a little bit of Tracyes life. He lets Mandy write to Tracey if she really want to.

  15. 1. First Tracey is very nice and kind to Mandy but she's telling lies and she's making herself better than she is in real life. When Mandy findes out more about Tracey's real life, Tracey get more and more angry and she's not very polite to Mandy. We think that this development is understanding because Tracey has a hard life and maybe she is ashamed of her situation and her way to be like in person. Mandy is very understanding and doesn't get very upset when she findes out, she doesn't over react and then I think that Tracey could be a little bit nicer because Mandy just want to help and be there for her.

    2. "Seems like each letter takes us a little further, you know what i mean" Mandy writes to Tracey and she means that they are more open now and they are more honest with each other. their friendship is more true and bigger. Now they really can open up their heart and tell each other how they really are and feel. Mandy also mean that each letter takes their friendship a bit further, a step forwards. First when Mandy finds out the letters are a bit hard and not very polite. But then the letters are more personally and Mandy wants to know about Traceys real life in jail, how it is like and what she can do there and so on . Mandy is a bit curious to know more and also a little bit dissapointed in Tracey because she lied to her for so long and Mandy really trusted her.

    3. In the jail Tracey has to show herself as hard and without feeling. She has to be strong to survive and she also thinks that she really is that strong, she can't be week.
"until she met trace and got hit in the face", Tracey write in her poem and she means that Mandy got her to realize the reality, and she faced the truth. Mandy brings out Traceys good/sweet side and really know how she is.
We think it descibes Traceys situation very well, it's about how Tracey is/was.

  16. 1) Well from being a lier, Tracey changes to being honest and telling Mandy the truth about being in Garret. Tracey kinda ''locks'' herself when it comes to family questions and why she is in garret. Mandy kinda goes on her nervs when she talks/acts like life in garret is easy so Tracey is very ironic against her. Tracey is actually more honest and giving her more information like, when she will go out and how the staff in garret are like.

    2) She is telling Tracey that the more they write to eatchother the more they get close. Since Mandy finally got to know the truth about Tracey being in garret Tracey is more cocky and doesnt act like the ''Happy'' girl like when she was lying.

    3) After reading the poem, we think that Tracy sounds like a girl you cant mess with and doesn't take shit from anyone and it sounds like shes the boss in the jail.

    4) Well her mum get afraid because she thinks that Tracey will probably come and visit them when she is released but her dad takes it very chill because he used to be in garret because he used to steal bikes when he was young.

  17. 1)Tracey tells the truth about that she's locked in a maxium place called Garett where they put youngsters who have done badly things. She also admits that she put the ad in cuz she wanted to know what a real life was like and what normal persons do. Tracey becomes more open and honest as a person.

2)She means that they being better friends after each letter they send to each other. After Mandy founds out that Tracey is in jail, they gets more open to each other and can talk about everything.

    3) I thinks Tracey’s poem is very good and it's describe her very well.

    4) Her mother is getting scared and thinks that Tracey will visit their home and her dad tell her that he also was criminal when he was in the same age as Tracey.

    SvaraRadera
  18. 1.From the begining it seems like Tracy is a normal girl that is very kind and carrying becuse it makes her feel better about herself, but infact is all of that a big LIEE! Everything she has told Mandy aboutherself was a like. Tracy is in fact in Garett (the jail) and when Mandy starts to ask many more questions and when they get to know eachother better it gets harder for Tracy to lie so the tells the truth to Mandy. And when she does that then Tracy seems very angry on every letter that she sends to, and i think that seemed wierd becuse the angry one should be Mandy and not Tracy. I think this devolepment is wierd but on the same time i kind of understand it. The wiers thing is that she changes from liying ti telling the truth so drasticly. I understand why it devoleps like that becuse i think that Tracy is ashamed of her self and wants to get all the lies of her chest.

2.The thing she means is that they have much better contact now becuse they are telleing the truth to eachoter, she also means that each letter they send to eachother gets them to be much better and closer friends.

3.It sounds like that in jail is tracy this "Godmother" that noone messes around with , becuse she is so tough and strong and doesent take chit from anyone. I dont think that Tracy was like that outside the jail , becuse she is accting hard in jail becuse she feels week on the inside so she wants ppl to think that she´s a hard girl that you shouldn´t mess with.

4.First the get chocked but her mom gets very scared and starts to ask many questions becuse she thinks that Mandy will visit Tracy in Garett but her dad isn´t scared at all becuse he him self has been locked in Garret.

  19. 1. In the beginning she seems very nice. When Mandy starts talking about her brother Steve and how he’s like, Tracey recognizes herself and totally ignores Mandy’s letters.
When Mandy found out that Tracey was lying Trace just stopped writing.
When she later say that she’s put in to Garrets she feels a bit more open.
Then Tracey and Mandy starts talking almost about everything.

    2. Mandy thinks that after each letter they come along better and better. Mandy believes that they almost can speak about everything.
Later when Mandy realizes that she can`t tell everything about herself and her family she doesn`t dare to write all personal stuff.

    3. Well, she writes down her thoughts wich is grate. But in our opinion the poem sais that she`s so stupid.

    4. They were surprised. It`s not really common that a daughter writes letters to a criminal. So we believe that the most parents would react the same. The mom were more chocked, and the dad wasn`t too angry/surprised. He told that he also had been to a similar place.

  20. We think it was pretty good! It contained rhymes and full of shit about Anita. Tracey as a person is really mean and strong, both inside and outside. She does really hates Garett and hates Anita as much as.

  21. Question 4

At first they were chocked, but after a while her father started to tell a story about when he was in jail.
We were not surprised over the parents reaction. Because everything happens in this book.

  24. How can anybody be more impressed than I am? Your English is fluent, and you have written insightful and personal answers.

Your answers vary a bit, and for instance some pupils have written about Tracey's novel that she has submitted to a competetion, whereas most of you analyse her "mock" poem about Anita. It must be hard trying to be tough all the time. I can see how the normality of everyday life would appear comforting to Tracey.

Congratulations on finishing (or almost anyway) the novel! I promise a reward Monday after you have completed answering the final questions.
